Session Descriptions & Learning Objectives

Air and Water Temperatures in Healthcare Facilities

This session explores the critical requirements and best practices for managing air and water temperatures in healthcare settings, with an emphasis on ensuring resident comfort and facility safety. Participants will examine regulatory standards, operational nuances, and the practical implications for various healthcare occupancies.

  • Understand the background and requirements for resident room air temperatures.
  • Identify the standards and regulations for facility water temperatures.
  • Evaluate operational considerations for maintaining potable water safety.
  • Distinguish temperature requirements across different healthcare facility types.
  • Apply knowledge of temperature management to promote safety and compliance.

Decorations and Finishes in Healthcare Facilities

This session provides a concise overview of the essential background and code requirements for interior finishes and decorations in various healthcare occupancies. Participants will examine fire resistance classifications, life safety code triggers, and operational nuances to ensure compliance and safety across healthcare, ambulatory, and business facilities.

  • Identify key fire resistance classifications for walls, ceilings, and floors.
  • Describe major finish testing methods and their relevance to healthcare.
  • Distinguish life safety code requirements for different healthcare facility types.
  • Recognize decoration and finish standards per Life Safety Code.
  • Evaluate operational considerations related to safety and code compliance for finishes and decorations.

 Healthcare Ventilation

This session offers a foundational overview of healthcare ventilation, focusing on key concepts and operational nuances for facility personnel. Participants will explore ventilation design standards, air exchange dynamics, pressure relationships, and specialized room requirements to support safety and compliance in healthcare environments.

  • Introduce healthcare ventilation design referencing 2017 ASHRAE 170 Table 7.1 & 6.4.
  • Explain air exchange, dilution, and their impact on infection control.
  • Describe pressure relationships and differential air within healthcare facilities.
  • Review requirements for airborne infection isolation (AII) and protective environment (PE) rooms.
  • Examine methods for measuring and calculating air exchanges and discuss related operational considerations.
